The Department of English Language and Translation aspires to become a leading center in the region recognized for excellence in quality education, innovative research, and active role in the community.
Mission
To provide students with high quality, student-centered education that enables them to master the English language skills and develop proficiency in critical and analytical thinking, teaching, translation, literature, research, and linguistics. The program also strives to meet the challenges of their professional careers and community needs, and to keep abreast with the demands of the marketplace and staying up-to-date with the latest know-how through a continuous update of the program’s study plan.
Learning Outcomes
Upon graduation, students are expected to:
- Demonstrate a high competency level in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Demonstrate a profound knowledge and understanding of the structure and usage of the English language, including its history, structure, contemporary use, and development as a global language.
- Develop the ability to apply critical reading and thinking skills to read, interpret, and analyze texts.
- Be able to write various types of high quality essays and research papers and use critical thinking skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to think and reason critically, to evaluate evidence and argumentation, and to form a critical judgment of one's own work as well as the work of others.
- Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the translation theory, principles and techniques; and apply translation skills to a variety of texts.
- Develop an ability to translate texts of various registers (legal, financial, literary, etc.) from Arabic to English and vice versa and utilize translation various software programs in the translation process.
- Be able to work as consecutive interpreters and demonstrate the use of note-taking techniques, shorthand conventions, consecutive interpreting strategies and professional ethics.
- Show familiarity with teaching methods and demonstrate the ability to teach English to speakers of other languages.
University Graduation Requirements
To receive a bachelor’s degree with a major in English Language and Translation, a student must fulfill all requirements related to credit hours, grade point average, program of study, and courses.
